In 1935, he traveled thousands of miles to Shuiji Town, Jianyang, Fujian—the site of the ancient Song Dynasty Jian Kilns. This act reintroduced the 800-year-old Jian Zhan to the Western world. My collection of Jian Zhan (Chinese Tenmoku Tea Bowls) is rooted in a legendary cross-ocean story.
