Wonderful figure set from the Asmat tribe in Papua, Indonesia. The Asmat have one of the most well-known woodcarving traditions in the Pacific, and their art is sought by collectors worldwide. Captain Cook was one of the early explorers to encounter the Asmat. In November 1961, the 23-year-old Michael C Rockefeller, son of Nelson A Rockefeller who was then the Governor of the State of New York and member of one of the wealthiest families in the US, disappeared in Asmat when his boat overturned while on an art collecting expedition. It was rumoured that he had been killed and eaten by the Asmat and subsequently the perpetrators have admitted to this. Rumours persist of ritualistic headhunting and cannibalism, despite many Asmat having converted to Catholicism. Postage costs approximate, please contact for exact costs.
