A group of artifacts excavated from the 1861 – 1862 winter camps of the 11th and 12th Mississippi Infantry Regiment near Lake Ridge, Virginia. The bayonet scabbard tip is Confederate issue; it would have had a wooden finial. The .69 “Buck & Ball” shows the imprint of the three .31 buckshot that made up the cartridge. The Federal Infantry Officer’s button was probably a memento taken off the uniform of a fallen officer. The artifacts were found by Terri Heilman and have his original tag. Lake Ridge is located in Prince William County; the camps here were in reserve to the forces guarding the batteries on the Potomac. After its victory at the Battle of First Manassas the Confederate army, now under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston, took up defensive positions along the Occoquan River south to Dumfries, with forward positions in Fairfax County. General Samuel Cooper in Richmond ordered the construction of heavy artillery batteries at Evansport, now part of Quantico Marine Corps Base. The Evansport batteries would be the most southerly of four major batteries, all of which would be located in Prince William County. Terry Heilman was a long time relic hunter here in Stafford County, Virginia. Terry hunted many of the sites here in Stafford County, the Confederate 1862 Occoquan Defense Line and other sites over the years. Like my father and I he cataloged all of his finds in groups or a lot of them with individual tags as to where it was recovered. The relics come as shown in a 4” x 5” Riker style case with original tag. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated.
