On offer is an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) 1686 map of the "Insularum Britannicarum Facies Antiqua". Copper engraved map of ancient Britain with the Orkney and Shetland Islands in an inset at upper left. The pictorial title cartouche represents the Roman conquest. DATE PRINTED: c.1750. This atlas was issued through the 18th century, so I am not able to exactly date this printing. SIZE:The printed area including titles is approximately 20.5 x 30.5 cm, 8.1 x 12.0 inches (medium) plus margins . ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Christoforus Cellearius (1638-1707). PROVENANCE: Published by Christoforus Cellearius , geographer in his ' Geographia Antiqua'. Published in Leipzig by Johann Frederick Gleditsch. An early standard work on the geography of Classical Antiquity first published in 1686. TYPE: Antique engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good, suitable for framing. Slight corner crease. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
