1723 Chart – East Coast. Capt Greenville Collins. Sir Ralph Delaval This is a fine example of Collins’ charts taken from his survey of British waters first published as Great Britain's Coasting Pilot in 1693. The work went through various editions with little alteration and this chart is dated in pencil to the reverse by an unknown hand as being from 1723. The chart is orientated to the west but I have rotated most of the photos for ease of viewing. The area covered includes much of the North Sea between the English east coast (London to Newcastle) and across to the Dutch coast. There is a compass rose to the centre, the English coat of arms with three lions and a wonderful cartouche. This latter contains a dedication to Sir Ralph Delaval, Admiral of the Red. The name of Sir Ralph is often misquoted as the end letters are “K.t.” denoting his title as his name is certainly not Delavalk. The chart has a centre fold and measures 513mm high by width 295mm wide when folded (590mm open) Condition: Overall in good condition. Thick laid paper. Good impression with later hand colouring. Good margins top and bottom, narrower laterally. Old tape support upper edge reverse. Age toning overall more pronounced to margins. Pencilled name to lower margin front and more to reverse.
