At the time of printing, the U.S.S.R. had recently become engaged in what is most commonly referred to as the "Cold War," which was at its core, and ideological and geopolitical battle between the United States and the U.S.S.R. and the respective allies of both countries that lasted for several decades. After WWII, the Soviet Air Force steadily became one of the most powerful and advanced branches of the Soviet Armed Forces. Over several decades, an emphasis would be placed on aerospace engineering, pilot training programs, During the Cold War, the Soviet Air Force was rearmed, strengthened and modern air doctrines were introduced.
