A truly elegant early mug, beautifully chased with birds and beasts, throughout which is set on a matted background for highlights, the centre front has an elegantly shaped vacant cartouche. The handle is scroll formed and decorated with a delightful acanthus leaf thumb piece. The inside of the bowl has evidence of historical gilding, now heavily worn. Sponsor's mark of James Wakely & Frank Clarke Wheeler.. Markings: Hallmarked for 925 sterling silver, London and 1891. Weight 155 grams. Please see images above. Measurements: Mug measures 3 1/4" (8.5 cm) tall. Rim diameter of 2 1/2" (6 cm). Holds just under 9 floz / 250ml. Condition: Item is in vintage condition, no splits, with a nice soft silver patina, a few very signs of use commensurate with age and use. Please see images above.
