Antique Toleware Tea Caddy 5.5” This is an antique toleware tea caddy from 1850 to 1880 and it measures 5 1/2 inches high A cylindrical hand-soldered tin tea canister featuring a tapered neck and original lid with faded japanned stenciling. In the mid-19th century, tea was a precious commodity stored in specialized tin containers known as caddies. Toleware, or decorative painted tin, became popular in the United States and Europe as an affordable way to mimic expensive lacquerware. These conical-top vessels often featured stenciled letters or floral motifs to identify the contents and protect the leaves from moisture and light.
