Nice and unusual antique copper engraved map of Astronomy, as the Celestial Sphere and its divisions, by Joan BLAEU (1596-1673), XVIIe Century. Fisrt, we attribute to the universe an axle which passes through the center of the earth, extending from one side right, to the other and as far as the sphere of the fixed stars. Around this axle, the entire events revolve other the space of 24 hours through the movements of the primum mobile. The points at which these axis ends are called the Poles of the universe, since the whole universe turns around them. One is called the arctic pole. The other is the antarctic pole, opposite to the arctic. The sphere is divided in various ways, by the numbers of circles. Of these the main once are 8 in numbers, 4 great and 4 lesser. They are called Great circles because they share the same center as the sphere and are projected through the middle of its circumference so that they divide one another and the sphere itself into 2 equal parts. These are the Equinoctial, the Zodiacal, the Horizon, and the Meridian. The lesser circle are those wose centers are not identical with that off the sphere, and which therefore divide it into 2 uniqual parts, as do the 2 Tropics and the circles that surround the poles, that is the Arctic and the Antarctic circle. ln text. Willem Blaeu was the founder of the Blaeu cartography dynasty, the finest mapmakers of the Golden age of Dutch cartography. He studied astronomy with Tycho Brahe at Uranienborg, and moved to Amsterdam to establish a shop in 1605, close his contemporaries and rivals Johannes Janssonius and Jacob Colom. He produced globes at first. Then, the sons of Willem, Johan and Joan, joined him in the firm. They produced their first atlas together in 1630 the "Atlas Appendix". Five years later, their produced their "Atlas Novus", edited in 4 languages. After the death of Willem, Joan expanded the Atlas Novus into the Atlas Major, the largest atlas of its time. This edition had between nine and twelve volumes, beautifully engraved and coloured. In 1648, they produced a very large wall world map in 20 parts. And they continued to produce globes too.
