Here we have an elegant George III Sterling Silver Marrow Scoop in the classic Old English pattern. The scoop is double ended with a broad bowl at one end and a narrow one at the other. The underside of the stem is engraved with the initials C C A. The marrow scoop was made in London by George Smith (II) and dates to 1771. George Smith registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1771, so this is one of his very early pieces. He was principally a spoon maker but other pieces by him are known. In 1791 he was joined in partnership by his son-in-law Thomas Hayter and they continued together until George's death in 1804 after which Thomas continued the business until around 1815, when he was joined by his son George Hayter and they were partners for a further 10 years. Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 250 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description. The marrow scopp is 22.9cm / 9ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 44.6g / 1.57oz of solid Sterling Silver. The hallmarks, on the underside of the central stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter Q for 1771 and the G S makers' mark for George Smith (II).
