Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a gorgeous Gorham JAPANESQUE Sterling Silver square tray with an elaborately chased Repousse border and hand-hammered honeycomb textured center, c. 1879. Silver pieces in the Japanesque designs from the Aesthetic Movement were influenced by Japanese style art and represent Gorham's leadership in American silver design and craftsmanship. Today any pieces in this style from this period are very hard to find. This amazing tray is a great example of this style with its square shape, downward curved sides, repousse decorated border with hand chased and engraved floral design and honeycomb textured center. The recessed center has a beaded border and hand-hammered flat center decorated with an elaborately engraved 3-letter intertwined monogram "C A R". Marked with the Gorham trademark stamp used from 1863-1890 and "Sterling, B 59, L" with "L" being the Gorham date code for 1879. Measures 1" high (at corners) and 7 1/2" in diameter. Weighs 420 grams. This fabulous silver bowl is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws and reflecting only minimal signs of wear.
