optical engineer to the Prince de Condé, one of the members of the famous family of opticians established since 1765 (Louis-Vincent Chevallier) on the Quai de l'Horloge in Paris. Known as Ingénieur-Chevallier since 1740, he himself opened a shop on the corner of Pont-Neuf. We owe him numerous inventions and improvements in the manufacture of a wide variety of instruments, instruments of experimental physics, experimental optics, chemistry, astronomy, mineralogy, surgery, etc. which were manufactured and found in the workshops and stores of Charles-Chevalier, engineer. Today he occupies a shop at 17 rue des Pyramides where he continues the tradition. *A clear room (in Latin camera lucida) is an optical device used as a drawing aid by artists and patented in 1806 by William Hyde Wollaston.
