Three beautiful copperplate-engraved antique maps in original hand color, printed on one sheet and published by Abraham Ortelius more than 400 years ago: [1] La Florida. Auctore Hieron. Chiaves. The first printed map of the American Southeast — the fascinating "La Florida," as the Southeast was called at the time, stretching along the Atlantic from the Carolinas to the Mexican coast. This map is based on actual information gathered during Hernando De Soto's explorations of the area in the early 1540s, and it shows Indian settlements, mountains, and river systems. It was drawn by Gerónimo Chaves, the Royal Cosmographer to Philip II of Spain and has two decorative cartouches. It measures 15.3 x 22.1 cm [6" x 8¾"] neat line to neat line and locates a number of features found on today's maps, including Cape Canaveral (Cañareal on the map), the Tortugas, Bahamas, and Bimini. The Mississippi River is R.de S.Spiritu, the name given it by early Spanish explorers, and today's Tuscaloosa, Alabama is Tascalisa. [2] Guastecan Reg. East-central Mexico along the Gulf of Mexico coastline, with decorative title cartouche and dozens of place names. Measures 17.6 x 22 cm [7" x 8¾"] neat line to neat line. [3] Peruviæ auriferæ regionis typus. Didaco Mendezio auctore. The gold-producing region of Peru. Includes present-day Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Peru, Ecuador, and parts of Venezuela and Colombia. The Amazon River is shown with several of its tributaries, and the map locates Bogota, Lake Maracaibo, the Galapagos Islands, and dozens of other features. Didacus Mendezius, named in the title block as author of this map, is likely Diego Méndez or Didaco Mendezio, chaplain of the monastery of the Incarnation in Lima, and cartographer for the viceroy of Peru. This panel labels the Equator and Tropic of Capricorn. With two Spanish sailing ships and a decorative title cartouche. Measures 34 x 22 cm [13¼" x 8¾"] neat line to neat line. Overall dimensions of the three panels together, neat line to neat line, are 34.5 x 46.2 cm [13¼" x 18¼"], with wide margins on all sides. This map was published circa 1606 in Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. There is Latin text on the reverse side, with the signature 9 in the lower corner. Condition: This map is in excellent condition. The paper is clean and sound, with wide margins and no marks, rips, or tears. There is a vertical center fold, as issued.
