Original color lithographed map of the Samoan archipelago, printed more than 120 years ago. The map shows the islands of Savaii, Upolu, Tutuila, Rose, and Manua, in the south Pacific. When this map was printed, the island chain was divided between Germany and the United States. Today the former German islands of Savaii and Upolu are known as Samoa, and the eastern islands are American Samoa — the only possession of the United States in the Southern Hemisphere. The map includes a place-name index and locates towns and shoreline features, including Pago Pago, Narragansett Passage, Ofoo, Cape Matatula, Satana, Valida, Apolima, Tufu, Tanga Point, Falifa Harbor, and Apia. The image area measures 25.4 x 34 cm [10" x 13½"], longitude is measured from Greenwich, and the map was published by George F. Cram of Chicago in 1901. It was published just a year after the ratification of the Treaty of Berlin, which had granted the rights over the eastern islands of the Samoa group to the U.S. and ceded the two western islands to Germany. Thirteen years later German Samoa became the first German territory to fall to the Allies during the First World War when New Zealand seized Apia on the island of Upolu.
