Old photograph on glass plate Plate dimensions : 8.5 x 10 cm approximately Editor / Photographer : House of Good Press Place : Sretensk, Russia Date : late 19th - early 20th century This plate comes from a collection created by a photographer from the House of Good Press, a publishing house founded in 1873 and which became Bayard Press in 1970. The image shows a tarantass, traditional Russian four-wheeled car, used in the countryside and on the main roads of the Russian Empire. In the background we can see a typical Eastern Siberian log house, giving a valuable testimony of local habitats. On the left, a dog and everyday objects reinforce the authenticity of this village scene. A rare photograph, offering a historical look at provincial Russia and its traditional means of transport.
