This is an authentic vintage Japanese glass fishing float, typically made from recycled glass bottles. These floats were used by fishermen, primarily from the Hokkaido Island of northern Japan, to keep their nets afloat. They are hand-blown and their thick glass often contains unique impurities, inclusions, and bubbles. The aqua or green color is typical, resulting from the recycled glass used in their production. They date back to time periods such as the 1960s and earlier. This one was collected from the beach in Okinawa in the very early 1970’s. It is very large, measuring 15.5 inches in circumference.
