I have seen and dealt with many collectibles and antique items, but I am not real familiar with this item. I believe this is an antique black lacquered bamboo Betal box and ashtray with a gold leaf overlay decoration. Betal boxes were used as trinket boxes and also to hold hand rolled cigarettes which makes the ashtray a nice companion item. The box stands 3.75" and is 2" in diameter at the opening. The ashtray measures 3.25" in diameter. Overall, the box just has some minor wear to the gold and the ashtray shows more on the holder sections and rim. Please zoom in on the pictures and review condition. This is a really nice set! Thanks for looking and be sure to check out my shop, not2shabbyshop, for more fabulous finds!
